Samsung May Make 2nm AI Chips for Another Client

Samsung is trying hard to secure deals with global clients for its upcoming 2nm process. The company may reach an agreement with Tenstorrent, a chip design startup, to manufacture its next-gen AI chips. If successful, the Korean foundry will use its 2nm nodes for these chips, allowing it to boost its semiconductor business.

Tenstorrent may use Samsung’s 2nm process for its AI chips

As the 2nm era approaches, the foundry market has heated up, with chip makers trying to attract customers with their advanced solutions. While industry leader TSMC has locked in most major clients, including Nvidia, Apple, AMD, and Qualcomm, Samsung has also signed contracts with a few key customers. For example, the Korean firm reached a $16.5 billion deal with Tesla to produce chips using the 2nm node.

Recently, Jim Keller, legendary microprocessor engineer and CEO of Tenstorrent, spoke to Nikkei Asia to share insights about the company’s next-gen AI chips. The company is currently in talks with Japanese firm Rapidus, Samsung Foundry, and TSMC for its upcoming 2nm AI processor.

Tenstorrent will also consider Intel for chip production, but for now, the company still has a lot of work to do. Intel, which produced chips for itself, is now offering manufacturing services for other companies. The publication also said that the startup will use processes in its chips from multiple chipmakers rather than relying on just one. However, it’s unclear how large the deals might be for its 2nm chips.

If Samsung strikes a deal with Tenstorrent, it would be another big win for the company, which has been struggling lately to attract clients. This will also help the firm show the performance of its 2nm process while strengthening its position in the semiconductor market. Only time will tell if the foundry can make a comeback in this space during the 2nm era. For now, all eyes are on the upcoming in-house 2nm Exynos 2600 chip, which may power the Galaxy S26 series in some regions.
