China’s Cambrian rides AI chip demand to first annual profit despite US curbs

Cambrian Technologies (寒武記, hereafter Cambrian), a semiconductor design firm touted as the “Chinese Nvidia,” is on track to post its first annual profit as demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips rises in China despite U.S. sanctions last year.

According to China’s Hongxing News on the 2nd, Cambrian recently issued its 2025 outlook and said last year’s revenue is expected to climb 410.8%–496.0% from a year earlier to 6 billion–7 billion yuan (about 1.2548 trillion–1.4627 trillion won).

Cambrian also projected last year’s full-year net profit at 1.85 billion–2.15 billion yuan (about 386.8 billion–449.2 billion won), swinging to the black from a net loss of 450 million yuan (about 94.1 billion won) a year earlier.

Hongxing News said,

2025 will be the first year Cambrian achieves an annual profit since its listing.

In August last year, Cambrian disclosed that it posted 1.04 billion yuan (about 202.0 billion won) in net profit for the first half of 2025 and noted there was a possibility of turning an annual profit.

Analysts attribute Cambrian’s improved results to growing demand for AI computing and China’s policy push for semiconductor self-reliance.

Earlier, as the United States tightened export controls on advanced AI chips, China’s big tech corporations struggled to secure products from Nvidia and AMD. With uncertainty lingering over sales of Nvidia’s H20 AI chip in China amid U.S.-China tensions, Chinese authorities instructed domestic big tech corporations to expand the use of homegrown AI chips. In the process, Chinese corporations chose Cambrian’s domestically made chips, and Cambrian benefited as a result.

Cambrian said it,

continued to expand the market on the strength of our products’ superior competitiveness

Adding,

By actively advancing on-site adoption of AI application scenarios, revenue rose sharply from the same period a year earlier and the company’s overall operating performance also improved.
